Using meta data & page titles

Search Engines such as Google give webmasters the opportunity to communicate with them to mention what their website is about, these communication mediums are known as Meta data, Tags and Page titles. This gives the Search Engine a better overview of your website for instance, Google can’t read images so adding an “ALT Attribute” will inform the search engine what exactly is in the picture.

Meta Description:

The meta description tag is used to describe your website to the searchers looking at your site’s result in the search engines. Google looks at this tag but it will display it’s own description picked from your page. Google will display a snippet of your content that it believes to be most relevant to the searches query. Although Google does not display this information it will read and assess it and so it is still important to get it right.

Tips to creating the perfect description:

  • Include your main keywords within the Meta Description without excessive use
  • Keep it page-specific
  • Keep it short and focused (under 165 characters)
  • Ensure it is keeping to your website theme
  • Avoid repeating your keywords over and over
  • Write it to be read, not for an outlet for keyword stuffing.

Meta Keywords:

The Meta keywords tag allows you to input the keywords that you feel are most relevant to your page. Search Engines are now paying less attention to this attribute as most webmasters spam this section of the website, adding keywords which are neither relevant or suitable the webpage they are optimising. It is however, likely that Google will look at this tag and weigh it against the ethical scale of your website.

Tips to creating a good Meta keywords tag:

  • Abbreviations of your keyword
  • Plurals of your keyword
  • Incorrectly spelt alternatives to your keywords (A mistake most users may make)
  • Semantically similar words

Page Titles:

The page title is the most important tag that you will be using as it gives an overview of your web page. We talk about the title tag as being part of the Meta data when officially it is not, for convenience we will add it to the Meta section of our website. Each page on your website should have it’s own title which is both unique and relevant to the corresponding page. The title tag will be displayed both in Google’s natural listings and in the web browser of the user.

Tips to creating a good page title:

  • Include your main keywords but make sure it’s readable and not keyword stuffed.
  • Keep it page-specific
  • Keep it short and focused
  • Ensure it is in keeping with your website theme
