Why are backlinks important?

Google actually awards a score from 0-10 based around how reputable your website is, this is called Page Rank. Links from websites with high Page Rank tend to have more impact then new, lower page ranked websites. Page Rank is a main indicator however the system is more complex for instance, Microsoft has a Page Rank of 10, If you manage to get a backlink on the front page of www.microsoft.com than the chances are your website will benefit massively. One thing any webmaster has to be aware of is not all pages on a particular website carries the same Page Rank, as an example the contact us page on the Microsoft website will have a lower Page Rank than the main homepage so if you obtain links on the contact us page it will have less of an impact. Part of the authority of the website linking to you will pass over some of that authority, which is also known as “Link-Juice”.
