Picking the best domain name for your website can be difficult, most webmasters can’t decide if they should pick a domain name for it’s keyword strength or a brandability, easy to remember and sometimes short domain name. The domain name you choose can help the optimisation of your website if you add keywords. Webmasters are also given the choice of domain extension which can sometimes make or break a website when chosen incorrectly.

Domain extension list:
All domain extensions mean a different purpose in the eyes of the user and Search Engines. Most Search Engines realise that some webmasters use extensions for multipurpose tasks for instance, .com would entail a website to be an US based company however Search Engines now rank .com’s within the UK Search Engine Result Pages (SERPS).
.com – US company
.co.uk – UK company
.net – US network
.ca – Canadian website
.de – German website
.fr – French website
Keyword rich domain vs Branded domain
Free SEO Training has put together a list of benefits of choosing both a keyword rich domain name and a branded, usually short domain.
Branded Domain name:
A branded domain name is a name of a company or business for example Twitter.com. Most successful branded domain names have no keywords within their title e.g Google, Google’s domain name has no keyword within their title such as “Search Engine”. Google generates most of it’s visitors on the ability of it’s visitors to remember it’s domain. If you have a keyword rich domain and that keyword generates 10,000 visitors per month it’s highly likely to rank for that keyword as opposed to generating the same traffic from branded domain names unless your website is easy remembered and worth remembering.
Keyword Rich Domain names
A good example of a keyword rich domain name is this website, we currently have “free SEO Training” within our domain name. The point of this is to indicate exactly what we do whilst having a good chance at ranking for “Free SEO Training” and “SEO Training”. We are far more likely to generate more traffic by these two search terms as opposed to using a branded domain, in this case we may give off the wrong impression of being a premium training provider. A strategy normally adopted by webmasters is to have multiple keyword rich domain names which link to monetized websites in order to generate an income whilst having a branded website to offer services.
